Jon and Tyrion realize both what a horrible mistake they’ve made, and audience realize the same thing, having invested in this character for a decade or more, only to see her arc end like this. I thought she was maybe going to make a beeline for the Red Keep and take out Cersei that way, which would have been a morally questionable move given her surrender, but no, instead she turns into a literal war criminal by torching the entire city, criss-crossing it to make sure everyone and everything burns (including her own remaining soldiers and allies), setting off her father’s Wildfire caches for good measure (that was a nice touch, admittedly). Hence, the bells.īut then she just…snaps. Her soldiers took King’s Landing with pretty much zero losses, and the Lannisters surrendered. Dany remembered how dragons work and pretty much singlehandedly won the battle herself, destroying the entire iron fleet and all the wall defenses and half the Golden Company. Acceptable losses, in her mind, perhaps, but ones that might still make her split with Jon and Tyrion and everyone else. I could see some sort of plotline where the battle was not going her way, and the only way to win and take out Cersei was to cut a path to the castle with fire, burning up Lannister soldiers and civillians alike.

This was…something else entirely, and did not feel like a logical next step, especially given how it was set up. The “worst” thing she’s done to this point was execute the Tarlys on the battlefield as an example, and yet that was still war. She killed Khals who wanted her dead and were raping and pillaging all the communities they could, Masters who wanted her dead and were enslaving thousands of people. And yet when you look at who she’s killed, she has never fully gone beyond the pale until now. Yes, the people citing that she has burned people alive previously and seemed a bit rage-tinged are correct.

I get it, this was always possible.Īnd yet the entire point of the series has been about Daenerys attempting to overcome the painful, horrible history of her family and become something better.

We have the long, long lineage of mad Targaryens, her father and brother included, and in case we forgot about that, we heard the “when a Targaryen is born, the gods flip a coin” line both in the “previous on” scenes and then Varys says it again to Jon for good measure. We have Dany’s vision of the throne covered not in snow, but in ash. Before everyone chimes in at once, I understand that this was “foreshadowed.” We have the woman predicting Dany’s son would be a destructive tyrant, which is why she killed it.
